New Resource on Gender and Border Management

Integrating a gender perspective into the work of state institutions responsible for border management can have a significant impact on the ability of border officers to recognize and respond to the different needs and vulnerabilities of women, men, boys and girls. It can also help border services to collaborate more effectively with border communities. To do so, border institutions themselves need to be inclusive, representative and non-discriminatory.

This new Tool on Gender and Border Management, published by DCAF, OSCE/ODIHR and UN Women as part of the Gender and Security Toolkit, provides a framework to identify the varied gender aspects of border management in order to protect and promote the human rights of border staff and that of the population and comply with international human rights frameworks and obligations.

This Tool also highlights best practices and promising avenues to integrate gender in border management. It presents tried and tested strategies such as gender training, gender analysis, hiring specialized gender staff and regional cooperation featured in case studies from around the world.
