High-Speed Satellite Communications Help Facilitate Disaster Recovery in West, Texas

New ViaSat high-capacity satellite system improves connections for first responders

As first responders worked to get the community of West, Texas back on its feet, they were able to coordinate relief operations using new high-speed satellite communication links. Team Rubicon, a veteran-run non-profit that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams, relied on the links to coordinate the services of numerous local and national response organizations, and to provide situational awareness of the activities to local government officials.

The Information Technology Disaster Resource Center deployed Exede® Enterprise satellite service from ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) along with computers and wireless infrastructure for access to the Internet, e-mail, imagery, social media, and corporate networks.

"We were able to coordinate the efforts of more than 4,500 volunteers and organize the distribution of 40 tons of supplies to the community," said Shane Valverde of Team Rubicon. "Communications is always a critical component to our success and the performance improvement from this new satellite system increased our effectiveness."
