Smiths Detection Wins $19 Million U.S. Army Contract for Advanced Meteorological Measuring Systems

Follow-On Profiler Order Gives U.S. Army and National Guard Access to Real-Time Weather Data for Precise Military Operations

Smiths Detection today announces it has received a $19.3 million contract from the U.S. Army for Meteorological Measuring Set-Profiler (MMS-P) systems, taking the total Program value to over $89 million. The sophisticated upper atmospheric measuring systems are used to extend the accuracy of field artillery. Deliveries will start in October 2009.

Accessing real-time atmospheric data to provide comprehensive updates, the MMS-P incorporates information from varied sources including, satellites, ground sensors and weather balloons. The system uses a customized version of the MM5, the most widely used and ¬accepted mesoscale meteorological model in the world. It also features an enhanced radiosonde system including a simplified operator interface.

Mal Maginnis, President, Global Military and Emergency Responders for Smiths Detection, said: "We are delighted with this strong validation of our participation in the MMS-P Program. The U.S. Army continues to deploy the most advanced technologies available and the MMS-P provides critical data for accuracy in certain military operations."

The advanced MMS-P delivers more accurate atmospheric updates than earlier generation systems and expands the range of field by 200%. The system is built into a specially equipped HMMWV vehicle, making the system highly mobile.

MMS-P systems are currently in use worldwide by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army National Guard.
