The Pomona Police Department recently took delivery of a new 2008 MD-500E Police Helicopter, after a nearly 18 month purchase process. This new helicopter, is a replacement for the 1967 OH-6 helicopter that had previously served the community of Pomona for the last 15 years. This new helicopter is appropriately equipped with technological advances in law enforcement aviation, including; infrared imaging (FLIR), Stolen Vehicle Tracking System (LOJACK), GPS Moving Mapping system, and the high-powered search light (NIGHT SUN). The Pomona Police Department has had an aviation unit since the late 1960's, where the benefit of that unit was quickly realized. The Air unit has the ability to travel at speeds in excess of 100 mph, arriving quick to calls for service. The Air unit, due to its visual advantages, routinely locates fleeing criminals that might otherwise have eluded patrol cars. The Air Unit also regularly assists in locating missing persons, conducts routine patrols for suspicious activity, and is involved in public relation events. This new helicopter will serve the City of Pomona for many years to come, as the life expectancy is 25-30 years. For more go to: Rotorhub.com
