Smiths Detection to Supply Amtrak with Additional Advanced Portable Explosives Detection Systems

Highly-Portable SABRE 4000s Enabling AMTRAK to Rapidly and Non-Intrusively Screen Passengers and Carry-on Baggage for Explosives

Smiths Detection, part of the global technology business Smiths Group, today announces AMTRAK has purchased additional SABRE 4000 advanced explosives detection systems to expand its capability for rapid, non-intrusive screening of passengers, trains and stations.

Using proven Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), the versatile hand-held system can quickly detect and identify explosives as well as narcotics, chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. However, AMTRAK will continue to use only the explosives detection capabilities.

The SABRE 4000, ideally suited to discreet, random screening of passengers and their belongings, can detect explosives in 10 seconds with a full analysis in 20 seconds, completing the entire process in under a minute. In addition, with the dual sample collection capability, it can be used to collect and review both swabs and vapor samples.

Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, said: "We are delighted to extend our relationship with AMTRAK through this follow-on order. The technology, accuracy, speed and portability make the SABRE 4000 an ideal security solution for many environments, including mass transit, airports, ports, border crossings and critical infrastructures."

Cherif Rizkalla, President, Smiths Detection, Americas, said: "We are pleased that our initial systems utilized by AMTRAK were effective in helping maintain the safety of train commuters with minimum disturbance. The SABRE 4000 represents the best of detection capability where increased security doesn't have to mean inconvenienced, frustrated passengers."
