Barco's new cross-cockpit collimated display solution selected for U.S. Air Force B-2 training program

Barco, a leading global provider of visual display systems for simulation and training, announced today that it has been selected for the visual display system upgrade for the B-2 trainers located at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. Three simulators will be retrofitted with Barco's new CD series of cross-cockpit collimated displays. Barco will perform the upgrade work via a contract through RSI Visual Systems (Euless, Texas).

"Our goal is to provide the latest and best technology for use by the B-2 Training department to aid in the effective training of the Air Force's B-2 aircrews, adds Ken Bowers, program manager, Redifun Visual Systems. "RSI Visual Systems looks forward to working with Barco on this program. Barco's new display system will allow the full capability of the Raster XT Image Generator to be shown."

The B-2 Weapon Systems Trainer (WST) is one of the most advanced training systems employed by the U.S. Air Force today. As such, the upgrade program has attracted the largest solution providers in the industry to compete for the contract. As the chosen prime contractor, L3 Communications' Link Simulation and Training contracted RSI Visual Systems to deliver the latest visual display solution for the B-2 program. Barco's new CD series of cross-cockpit collimated displays will be key to providing the high-fidelity and life-like, out-of-window visual scenes for weapons systems training.

Barco's collimated display solution incorporates the most recent technology and offers improved display performance over the traditional collimated display systems. This solution consists of an advanced, wide field-of-view collimating mirror design. Barco will provide the projector platform, rear-projection screen, and light-tight enclosures. The CD Series will be optimized for use with Barco's new line of SIM 7 LCoS projectors and is engineered to be FAA/JAA Level-D compliant.

"Barco's vision of the future and LCoS projection enabled them to provide unprecedented support through the proposal and the production stages adds Mr. Bowers. "This promises a bright future for the two companies' relationship. We will continue this partnership in seeking to add capability to new and other training systems as opportunities arise."

"The B-2 Weapons Systems Trainer upgrade is a significant program for Barco as we launch our new cross-cockpit collimated display systems," said Dr. Al Herman, Vice President and General Manager for Barco's simulation activities. "As each B-2 mission is rehearsed in the trainer, our system will aid B-2 aircrews to become proficient in operating the aircraft's weapon systems under realistic, simulated combat situations."
