The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intends to offer a second contract to Danbury-based manufacturer Smiths Detection to make more next-generation radiation detection systems, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., said Thursday. Smiths Detection, which employs 105 people at its Danbury plant, has already produced 140 Radseekers for use by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Radseeker was developed by the DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO). “Smiths Detection makes a unique product that will not only help the Department of Homeland Security better secure our borders but will keep jobs in Connecticut,” Lieberman said. “We have a proud manufacturing tradition in our state, and Connecticut workers still have what it takes to make complex national security products. I’m very proud a home state company has been identified to serve our nation in this way.” The intended $3.35 million contract would call for the production of an unspecified number of Radseekers that will be used by CBP agents to resolve nuclear threat alarms during secondary screening of cargo containers at border crossings and the nation’s ports of entry. In an effort to accelerate the deployment of these next-generation hand-held detectors, DNDO determined that a sole-source contract was needed to meet the immediate needs of DHS agencies.
