D3O Covert: Discreet yet powerful protection against blunt force trauma The D3O Covert is a brand new range of discreet blunt force trauma protection apparel from impact protection solutions provider D3O. The British based company first developed the Covert impact jacket with Leo Minor following a tender to supply riot protection apparel to the French Gendarmerie in 2011. The D3O Covert range features this unique patented technology offering soft, lightweight, comfortable and discreet protection against impact force, but without compromising on protection against impact. The range has been expertly developed by D3O's in-house team of designers and material developers and its stealth design means they can be worn discreetly under normal clothes, ideal for plain clothes police officers. Its low-profile design was well received by the French Gendarmerie, as the police officers presented a less aggressive and more approachable image during crowd control situations. D3O manufactures a unique patented impact protection technology which is used to make a material with high shock absorbing properties. The material is a blend of dilatant fluid, combined with polymers and enhanced chemistry, which enable D3O to create 3D shapes in a foam, which encompass the lightweight and protective properties of both the dilatant and foam polymers. It delivers the most flexible, comfortable and discreet protection on the market and it consistently outperforms traditional foam based materials. In standard conditions, D3O's molecules flow freely allowing the material to remain soft, flexible and comfortable to wear, but on impact, they lock together to absorb and dissipate impact energy and reduce the force transmitted. The molecules instantly return to their flexible state, meaning it is comfortable to wear even after repetitive impact trauma. As a strain-rate sensitive material, the stronger the impact, the more the molecules react, and better the protection. D3O tests its materials and components using the highest standard of testing and meet the standards of SATRA, STR, NPL, INSPEC, HPE, MERL, BSI. The Covert jacket, developed with Leo Minor, meets the standards of the French Gendarmerie tender.
