CNI in the Gulf should be on full alert!
The killing of General Qassim Suleimani by a US drone strike has massively increased tension in the Gulf region and dramatically increased the danger of drone attacks on critical infrastructure. Drones are widely available to Iran and its proxies and are tough to detect and stop, as we saw on many occasions in 2019.
They have geopolitical advantages too. Pilotless drones could enable the Iranian regime to strike a high profile and costly blow against the US and its allies without the danger of Iran suffering further casualties, which in turn would require further retaliation and escalation.
If Iran is looking for a measured response to US action while trying to avoid escalation, drones may be their weapon of choice.
At this point, we have no way of knowing what Tehran is thinking, but CNI sites in the region should stand ready.
